Songs, arias, duets and ensembles from opera and musical theater. The scenes will be cast with more than 25 Cal Poly voice students who will have the unique opportunity to be considered for roles and chorus parts with the Opera San Luis Obispo Young Artist Program.

This concert features everything from authentic performances of traditional jazz standards to cutting-edge repertoire of world music, hip-hop and more. From the big band “wall of sound” to spontaneous interplay in jazz combos, the Cal Poly Jazz Bands respect the tradition while expanding its boundaries.

The Early Music Ensemble will be joined by Cal Poly faculty and local professionals in an evening of masterworks by the baroque master J.S. Bach.

Every year, the symphony holds auditions for student soloists of any major. The prize for several of them- a performance with the symphony, of course! Come hear this year’s winners and celebrate musical talent from across the university. This year, you will also be able to hear some of the music that the symphony will take on its April tour to the District of Columbia, including Kodaly’s “Peacock” Variations

Bandfest 2011! – Resonances Friday, November 18 • 8 p.m., Cohan Center Cal Poly Wind Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Pride of the Pacific Marching Band The wind band is spectacular in its ability to express emotion through an amazing array of musical colors. Tonight’s concert exploits this aspect in a performance of works that utilizes the complete palette available to the band. You will hear antiphonal brass performed from the balconies, unique instruments such as alto flute, recorders and piccolo trumpet, as well as a variety of other interesting compositional techniques that showcase the amazing possibilities of the modern wind band. Then, experience the true definition of “resonance” as the powerful “Pride of the Pacific” Marching Band fills the hall with dazzling arrangements performed at football games throughout the fall in Spanos Stadium.

Vocal Master Class with Erik Stein Tuesday, November 1 5 p.m., Davidson Music Center Room 218 Cal Poly’s Student Opera Theater presents Erik Stein—casting director for Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts. Stein will work with singers from the Music Department. PCPA is well known for its professional and entertaining performances on the Hancock campus, and at the Solvang Theatre during summer months. PCPA is a training program that specializes in helping singers prepare for careers in musical theatre performance, direction, and stage craft. FREE
