Build up your appetite by joining The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County for a morning hike on Thanksgiving Day. Bring friends and family out to begin the holiday with a mildly strenuous trail hike through The Land Conservancy’s private Black Lake Preserve.

The hiking guide will be Land Conservancy Executive Director, Brian Stark, who will provide a behind-the-scenes tour of an active restoration area for dune scrub habitat.

Hikers are encouraged to bring along Coast Live Oak acorns to spread at the restoration site. Black Lake Preserve is just one of various conservation properties in the world-class Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes. Hikers will enjoy views of Black Lake , a rare freshwater dune lake, and fabulous birding opportunities. Hawks, owls, ducks and rare plants are regular attractions at the private natural area that also boasts a display of Monarch butterflies each spring.

The Land Conservancy is raising funds to install educational signage and to establish passive recreation trails at multiple sites throughout Black Lake Canyon Preserve in an effort to actively engage community members in the responsible use of this fragile landscape.

The hike will be on Thanksgiving Day – November 26, 2007 – starting at 9am sharp. There is a suggested $5 donation per person or $10 donation per family. Space is limited and advanced sign-up is required. The Black Lake Preserve is off of Highway 1 in Nipomo but driving directions will be provided when hikers RSVP at 544-9096. Event is rain or shine.

For more information check out www.LCSLO.org or call the Land Conservancy at (805) 544-9096.
