During his 31-year career with the US Forest Service, Bill Worf held positions as district ranger, staff officer, forest supervisor, and regional director. After his retirement, he co-founded the environmental organization Wilderness Watch, an organization dedicated to protecting the lands and waters in the national Wilderness Preservation System. Through his work with Wilderness Watch, Worf closely followed the management of livestock grazing in the South Warner Wilderness of northeastern California. In this video, Worf speaks about his management-related conversations with South Warner Wilderness District Ranger Edith Asrow. This video is an excerpt from Bill Worf’s interview in WESTERN TURF WARS: THE POLITICS OF PUBLIC LANDS RANCHING ( www.westernturfwars.com )….

Steven Herman earned his PhD in zoology from the University of California at Davis and has taught courses in ecology, natural history, and animal behavior at The Evergreen State College since 1971. Over the years, he has closely followed the management of livestock grazing at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge (both in Oregon), and Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge in Nevada. In this 2004 interview, Herman explains how cattle grazing at Oregon’s Malheur National Wildlife Refuge increases the vulnerability of nesting birds to predation, and he comments on one approach of refuge managers to address this problem. This video is an excerpt from a much longer interview with Herman, the full transcript of which appears in the book WESTERN TURF WARS: THE POLITICS OF PUBLIC LANDS RANCHING. See westernturfwars.com…

Clait E. Braun received his BS in technical agronomy from Kansas State University (1962), his MS in wildlife management from the University of Montana (1965), and his phd in wildlife biology from Colorado State University (1969). During his student years he was at times employed by the US Department of Agriculture in Kansas and Montana, and by the Montana Department of Game and Fish. In 1969 Dr. Braun joined the Colorado Division of Wildlife where, during his thirty-year career, he held various positions including program manager, wildlife research leader, and researcher. His studies of sage-grouse in Colorado led to his discovery of the Gunnison sage-grouse in 1977. He was also instrumental in naming the species. In this video Clait Braun talks about impacts of Holistic Management on avian species in the western United States. This video is an excerpt from a longer interview with Braun, the transcript of which is contained in WESTERN TURF WARS: THE POLITICS OF PUBLIC LANDS RANCHING (…
