Student and faculty poets will read provocative poems about romantic love during Cal Poly’s LoverSpeak poetry reading at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in Room 104 of the Graphic Arts Building on campus.
The poems range from purely romantic and somewhat erotic to deeply serious and screamingly hilarious, according to poet and English Professor Kevin Clark. “Some readers will offer traditionally positive perceptions of love; others will have caustic views of romance. All kinds of poems will be offered, from classic rhyming poems in the Keatsean tradition to fast-paced colloquial poems in the Beat tradition.”
Tickets to LoverSpeak are $3 for the public and $2 for students. All attendees will be entered in a raffle to win a variety of gifts from local restaurants, coffee and yogurt shops, and other stores in San Luis Obispo. Students from across the Cal Poly campus will gather Feb. 21 for a letter-writing event aimed at helping St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital – and they hope the public will join them.
The ’80s-themed event, titled Up ’til Dawn, will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. in Chumash Auditorium and will feature live entertainment, free food, shirts, games and prizes.
Envelopes, stamps, and pre-written donation letters will be provided; students will bring addresses and send letters to family and friends to help raise money for the children of St. Jude’s Hospital.
Fraternities, sororities, Cal Poly housing groups, sports clubs, local businesses, dance clubs, and many other clubs and organizations have already committed to this event. This event is open to the public. To attend, please bring at least seven addresses that can be used to send donation letters.

The workshop will run from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 10 in Kennedy Library’s second-floor lounge. The event is free and open to all skill levels.
Participants will learn how to design and build a game using an Arduinos (an open-source electronics platform) and breadboards (reusable electronic test boards analogous to circuit boards). Participants will also determine the strategy and layout of the physical game board.
The event will culminate with a tennis ball target competition in the stairwell. Scoring monitors will broadcast the players’ success electronically.
The hands-on event is designed to blend the virtual world with physical play and encourage participants to experiment with Arduinos. It will be led by art designers and digital media specialists Scott Hutchinson and Michael J. Newman.
