A progress report on the local economy will be the focus of the Mid Year Update of the Central Coast Economic Forecast on Thursday, June 7, 2012. Economic Forecaster Chris Thornberg and panelists Tom Jones (PG & E), Ty Safreno (Trust Automation) and Kevin Meyer (Specialty Silicone) will anchor the event.
Jones, Safreno and Meyer will participate in a panel discussion on the local job market and its role in both the success and struggle of area companies. Maggie Cox of BCA will moderate the panel. Cuesta College President, Gil Stork, willl serve as Master of Ceremonies for the Mid-Year Update. Thie program will be held at the Paso Robles Event Center, June 7, 2012. Doors open for continental breakfast and networking at 7:30 am. The program will begin at 8:30 am and conclude at 11:00 am. Tickets are $50/ person. Ryan Calo, director of privacy and robotics research at Stanford Law School’s Center for Internet and Society, will present “Robots, Privacy and Society,” as part of the Technology, Policy & Ethics Lecture Series. Robots — sometimes called drones — have been making headlines for years on the battlefield, but now they’re starting to make an impact on society at large. Their surveillance roles in law enforcement and by paparazzi and activists are raising concerns about whether existing laws are enough to safeguard civil liberties.

Political Science Professor to Discuss ‘War of the Womb’ at Cal Poly May 17
Alesha Doan, associate professor in the Political Science Department at the University of Kansas, will present “War of the Womb: Expanding Morality Policies in an Era of Small Government” at noon Thursday, May 17, in Room 104 in the Graphic Arts Building at Cal Poly.
Doan will discuss how politicians and citizens opposed to “Obamacare” claim the policy is an unfair intrusion into individuals’ private lives. Critics, however, do not extend these same sentiments to the widespread government intrusion into the lives of women. Doan will talk about how the past year saw passage of many laws across the U.S. that some people have referred to as being “anti-women.” Doan will illustrate how anti-abortion advocates and politicians have used a strategy of “radical incrementalism” to create a 21st century “war of the womb.”
Doan’s research examines social policies, with a specialized focus on reproductive policy and the intersection of race and gender within these policy areas.
The talk is free and open to the public. It is co-sponsored by Cal Poly’s College of Liberal Arts’ Speaker Funds and the Political Science and Women’s and Gender Studies Departments.
