I wasn’t expecting to see the actual ring of fire, but it turned out to be almost perfect from my backyard. I used a digital SLR with some old manual lenses to takes some pictures. The eclipse took place here from about 6:45 to 7:30 PM, so the sun was starting to set when it happened.

Funnyman Sasha Baron Cohen is at it again, this time as a flashy, offensive Middle Eastern dictator who comes to the U.S. From the guy who brought us Ali G and Borat comes a new character named General Aladeen — a ruthless dictator from a fictional country in North Africa who is part buffoon, horn dog and ruthless bloodthirsty ruler in “The Dictator.” Through a ridiculous set of circumstances, that I will spare you the details because they are so contrived, Aladeen ends up in New York while his even sillier double is in charge of his country. There are plenty of cameo appearances from big stars to keep things interesting. As for the element of political satire we get a pretty heavy-handed lecture that borders on being a bit corny. The Dictator, like so many other characters by Cohen, is offensive but somehow there is a certain likeability to him. “The Dictator” is one tasteless gag after another…from playing the Munich Olympic games on Wii to having a massive misunderstanding of 9-11; there is plenty to choose from.

During the 1850′s White House Tavern was the place for armory workers (at least the men) to raise a glass during work hours or after work hours. The discussion ranged from wages, working conditions, politics to just things men discuss when they are together. It was later decided that the The White Hall Tavern and others like it were not such a good thing and was breaking the morals of the armory workers. The Tavern was owned by Frederick Roeder, a German immigrant and later a Union sympathizer

When I was young guy, my late father bought me this book at a garage sale. He would read it to me every night on the porch. One arm around me, book in other hand. This book has so much meaning to me, for this alone. Thank you Mr. Sendak

Audiovisual impressions of the French Presidential Victory Celebration in Paris. Recorded @ la place de la Bastille on the evening of May 6th 2012: Music and dancing, flags and banners, heroic amounts of sausage & frites. Details of a relieved and exuberant crowd celebrating a victory that was by no means assured, and that they hope will usher in the dawn of a more humanist and egalitarian France.

Today was almost a carbon copy of yesterday as another heavy afternoon shower unloaded on the city. The Khmers are pretty resilient,as this is normal during the rainy season. The same areas of the Capital flood, but yesterday served as a good lesson to those that tried to brave the flooded streets and found their cars and motos stuck in meter deep water. Traffic moved smoother as alternate routes were more planned out.

A day after Japan shut down its last nuclear reactor, across the sea in Samcheok, South Korea, about 150km south of the DMZ, protests towards the building of a nuclear power plant in the city limits continue. The rally and parade which took place in the city’s core and main street had about 250 protesters holding signs, umbrellas, and clappers, chanting their displeasure and opposition towards the project. This weekend’s protests were joined by Greenpeace Korea, and members of Greenpeace International as well as the docking of Esperanza, in the neighbouring city, Donghae Port. The protest and march were for the most part peaceful. Tempers did start to flare as a protester and another man who, the protester claimed was in favour of the project crossed paths. There were no injuries in the brief encounter
