Visit our other sustainable occupies <here>.

Our sustainable informational Occupy Kingwood completed its 22nd consecutive Occupy. We no longer do much planning. It has become an organic event. Everyone simply knows that every Saturday between 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM we meet at the corner of Kingwood Drive and West Lake Houston Blvd with civil, educational, and information signs and an attitude to civilly engage our community.

The most satisfying part of this event is that every week we either get people who stop on their way to the grocery store or some other activity or who come join us because they heard about us through the grapevine. Many go into the parking lot, park, and come out to see what we are all about. Many subsequently join us at that time or some other week down the road.

While taking some pictures and videos I overheard a conversation between two women, Stephanie Kelly and Lauren Davis. I was not able to capture it all of it but I got enough to share its essence. It was a candid woman to woman conversation that needs to be heard by both men and women. If you doubted there is an inherent woman inequality by design and culture (War on Women), this candid discussion helps give it perspective.

Professor Stephen Davis gave his perspective on the inherent aberration that allowed a company like Facebook to amass an undue 104 billion dollar capitalization. He believes in an economic system like ours only solid progressive taxation can solve the economic wealth and income disparity said aberration creates.

Dr. John Theis gave his weekly commentary as usual. He had a salient stat on the median income of the American that should give everyone pause. He notes that had family median income kept pace simply with the value of the dollar, that it would be closer to $90,000 as opposed to $52,000.

We are proud of our own Dr. Theis who was named Innovator of The Year. It was featured in this week’s Kingwood Observer. Dr. Theis lead not only by title or words but with his actions in our community. He illustrated the best of service above and beyond the norm. Congratulations.

Funnyman Sasha Baron Cohen is at it again, this time as a flashy, offensive Middle Eastern dictator who comes to the U.S. From the guy who brought us Ali G and Borat comes a new character named General Aladeen -- a ruthless dictator from a fictional country in North Africa who is part buffoon, horn dog and ruthless bloodthirsty ruler in "The Dictator." Through a ridiculous set of circumstances, that I will spare you the details because they are so contrived, Aladeen ends up in New York while his even sillier double is in charge of his country. There are plenty of cameo appearances from big stars to keep things interesting. As for the element of political satire we get a pretty heavy-handed lecture that borders on being a bit corny. The Dictator, like so many other characters by Cohen, is offensive but somehow there is a certain likeability to him. "The Dictator" is one tasteless gag after another…from playing the Munich Olympic games on Wii to having a massive misunderstanding of 9-11; there is plenty to choose from.

During the 1850′s White House Tavern was the place for armory workers (at least the men) to raise a glass during work hours or after work hours. The discussion ranged from wages, working conditions, politics to just things men discuss when they are together. It was later decided that the The White Hall Tavern and others like it were not such a good thing and was breaking the morals of the armory workers.
The Tavern was owned by Frederick Roeder, a German immigrant and later a Union sympathizer. He owned and lived in the successful town confectionery bakery shop as well. The story goes as a Union sympathizer Roeder wanted to see the American Flag fly over Maryland . On his way back he was actually shot by a Union soldier, made it back to his home only to die shortly after.
Today the actual tavern has been refurbished and is a hub of activity in Harper’s Ferry. Street performers sing and tell stories. No beer or liquor is allowed on the city streets. Many of the near by restaurants do have a good cold one.

photos Janie Lambert
NikonP500
May 5 &6 2012

When I was young guy, my late father bought me this book at a garage sale. He would read it to me every night on the porch. One arm around me, book in other hand. This book has so much meaning to me, for this alone. Thank you Mr. Sendak. A couple of years ago, when the motion picture came out. I decided to relive my childhood and make the costume. I laid down on a 8′x6′ piece of fabric and started cutting around my body. Voila! I had the costume. Dancin in it was a lot of fun, but very warm. Every now and than when I’m sad or cold, I put my Max costume on and snuggle up. Rip Mr. Sendak, you will be a legend for generations to come.
