Abby Sunderland has been found alive. Abby’s attempt to sail around the World has ended. With her mast ripped from the hull of her small craft Abby is drifting in the Indian Ocean. Australian search crews were able to make radio contact with her from a search plane. She is in good spirits and awaiting rescue. She had been out of contact with her family when her satellite phone system failed during the severe storm that broke the mast.

Foul weather is slowing her rescue, but she should be safe within the next 24-48 hours. Her boat, “Wild Eyes” is upright but missing her rigging.

While the World debates the choice of her parents to allow her to undertake such a voyage, the simple fact is that few parents prepare their children for life as well as Abby’s parents prepared her for this voyage. Her vessel had safety measures that were the best that money could buy. She was located via the special rescue beacons that were redundantly installed. The vessel itself had floatation chambers built into it to make it nearly unsinkable. She was trained for countless hours at her father’s side.

You can follow Abby’s situation moment by moment at Abby Sunderland’s Blog.

Her other websites, Abby16.com and AbbySunderland.com can be found here and here.

The Epic Beard Man became an overnight sensation. The initial response from many who first viewed the video was that they saw an older man that was bieng harrassed by a “gang banger” and that the older guy then “kicked the gang banger’s @ss”. If you have already seen the video you probably already have an opinion. If you have not seen the video, watch and listen carefully. Then read the transcript and watch again. Then watch video from the videographer herself.

On Feb 16th, 2010 Iyanna Washington, a college student hailing from Oakland, CA (Youtube user iyannaw08) submitted the video recording “AC TRANSIT BUS FIGHT I AM A MOTHERFUCKER” to Youtube; a video she recorded of a african american individual and an older white man certainly having a quite hot discussion fueled by racial prejudice resulting within the literally violent confrontation.

Proper away, the on the net video clip has gathered over 400,000 displays and spawned a quantity of posts within the web where hundreds of various image macros have been created.

The old white individual has been given multiple pet names, including Epic Beard Man, and Old Zangief, in reference for the character by way of the Street Fighter video game franchise. It is also important to note the old man is wearing a T-shirt displaying the words “I AM A MOTHERF@CKER” signifying that this male might make a habit of seeking out confrontations on a regular basis.

Right after the black man’s nose is broken, he says “bring an ambulance” which may be misheard as both “bring M&M’s” and “bring Amber Lamps” due to a combination of his dialect and facial injury.

Why do People Watch Things Like This?

Conflict. Every drama has conflict. Every Blockbuster Movie has conflict. Every video game has conflict. We want the “good guy” to win. But sometimes it becomes difficult to tell who the “good guy” is. Is it the Vietnam Vet? Is he even a Vietnam Vet? Is it the young man who refused to allow someone to make a racial slur in regards to “shoe shine boy”? In the words of Rodney King, “…why can’t we all just get along?”
Different movies of conflicts and confrontations on city transit have become viral hits in the past, such as Bus Uncle, and Soulja Girl. But because this one involves racism, it motivated a outstanding magnitude of conversation inside a short magnitude of time.

San Luis Obispo County does not seem to have as much racial tension as many of the larger cities in this country. Still the tension is there in this country where ever you go regardless of your skin color. This video has caused a great deal of heated conversation regarding what actually occurred.

Watch the video and decide what you think happened. THEN COME BACK AND READ THE TRANSCRIPT! Then watch the video again and see if you still feel the same conclusion. Your mind may change, it may not. Post your comments and let us know how you feel.
You will have to login to Youtube to view the Video.

Transcript

When the video clips starts verbal conflict has already occurred.

Black man: …AC Transit
White man: Let’s get back to business. How much you charge me for a spit-shine?
Black man: what?
White man: How much you charge me for my Stacy Adams? I’m going to a funeral on Friday…You said you…
Black man: Did you get what I said just now?
White man: Yes
Black man: Why’d a brother gotta spit-shine your shoes?
White man: You offered!
Black man: I didn’t offer you shit.
White man: What’d you just say when you walked by me?
Black man: I said why, why a fuckin’ brother gotta spit-shine your shoes?
White man: You don’t have to!
Black man: Why a white man can’t spit-shine –
White man: [interrupting] – It could be a Chinaman! It don’t matter!
Black man: Look dude…
White man: I ain’t prejudice! What? You think I’m prejudice!
Black man: [pointing toward front of bus] Take your ass back up there and get the fuck out my face right now.
White man: Why you being so hostile, man?
Black man: ‘Cause. I’m pissed off.
White man: Well its better to be pissed off than pissed on.
Black man: Take your ass up there right now
White man: [standing to go to the front] You ain’t scarin’ this white boy. I’m 67 years old. You ain’t scarin’ me. You ain’t scarin’ me.
Black man: [now, also standing] I’m 50.
White man: You ain’t scared of me. You ain’t scarin’ me.
Black man: I’ll put my foot up your ass.
Older white man: No you won’t! No you won’t
White man: You won’t do nothin’ to me! [then something unintelligible]
Black man: Say it again! [then something unintelligible as woman who was filming talks over him]
Iyanna Washington: Say it again! Say it again, Pinky
Someone off camera whom many allege is Iyanna Washington: Beat his white ass! Whoop his ass!
Another passenger: Leave him alone!
Iyanna Washington: It ain’t worth it, blood, it ain’t worth it.
Black man: I’d put my foot up your ass.
White man: I see tough guys like you and I slap the shit out of them.
Black man: What?!
Another passenger: Stop it!
White man: Don’t fuck with me! He hit me! He fuckin’ hit me!
White man: He fuckin’ hit me first! He hit me in the face! [unintelligible] – self defense!
Iyanna: Open that shit! laughs
Iyanna: We can press charges, blood. I got in on videotape. He’s leakin’.
Black man: That motherfucker hit me. No no no no no.
Another passenger: Did he break your teeth?
Black man: No. Bring an ambulance.

California Surfers Hit the Waves Near Morro Bay as storm waves calm and calmer breaks return. Morro Rock, The Gibralter of the Pacific, looms in the background as local surfers enjoyed the calmer seas that still provided plenty of break to get some good rides.

Cayucos lies just North of Morro Bay, California. The breaks along the Central Coast provide some of the best surfing in the World in terms of challenging breaks and small crowds. There is a price to pay for the lack of crowds. The average water temerature looms around a chilling fifty-five degrees. Booties, gloves, and a decent hood along with your winter suit and you can have the time of your life. Locals are friendly and food and lodging are reasonable.

The Morro Bay breakwater was overcome by the huge waves. Spectators gathered on both sides of the famous Morro Rock to watch as the waves sprayed into the brief bit of sunshine. Nearly everyone had a digital camera and took advantage of the chance to get a shot of natures fury. The seagulls seemed oblivious to it all as this photographer captured the mountains of waves on the North side of the Morro Bay Breakwater.

Alone surfer paddled out of the Morro Bay Harbor mouth, while most of the local surfers only joked with each other saying, “so, are you going to paddle out?” to which most only replied with a wry smile.

One man on a surfboard becomes lost in the chaos of the waves of the harbor entrance to Morro Bay California. The harbor mouth has been known to swallow fishing vessels whole during such storms.

Meanwhile one fisherman seemed not to mind the crashing waves. This series shows the scale of the explosive California surf in the background as the foamy waves engulfed the breakwater.

Chuck Liddell, San Luis Obispo resident and Ultimate Fighting Championship icon, has been paired with professional dancer Anna Trebunskaya on “Dancing with the Stars.” The World Famous MMA (mixed martial arts) UFC (ultimate fighting championship) fighter is bringing new meaning to the old phrase, “I’m a lover not a fighter.” First you have to equate dancing with romance, which many people do.

Chuck Liddell has been a longtime fixture in San Luis Obispo. He has always been a humble man considering his World Championship Titles that he has earned in the UFC. He has also helped put San Luis Obispo on the map for much of the World that had no idea where SLO is.

In an almost shocking move Chuck Liddell recently decided to accept an offer to compete on “Dancing with the Stars.” While Mr. Liddell has spent his entire life as a professional athlete, the grace and fluidity required to dance with a professional dancer as a partner would be a challenge for even the greatest athlete. Like every highschool jock, Chuck Liddell seemed a little stiff at times and his expressions seemed to indicate that he wasn’t too crazy about the idea of dancing learned steps. Every movement that he has had to use in his professional fighting career has been completely impromptu. Still, much credit must be given to him simply for making it through such a complicated dance routine.

In the future Chuck Liddell might just surprise us all with what he does next. He is a champion and has already surprised the World a few times in his career. In the eyes of San Luis Obispo he is a champion no matter what he is doing!

Chuck and Anna perform the Rumba and score a 17. It probably wasnt their best performance but they are still a hit with the crowd and they will surely advance to the next round. You can vote for Chuck and Anna at 1-800-868-3402.

Cal Poly Press Release

http://multicultural.calpoly.edu

Cal Poly MultiCultural Center to Celebrate 12th Annual CultureFest on Oct. 18

SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly MultiCultural Center’s 12th annual CultureFest will be held Sunday, Oct. 18 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in San Luis Obispo’s Mitchell Park.

CultureFest is an annual celebration of diversity and culture within the Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo community. This year’s CultureFest theme is “Construction of Culture.” Cultural student clubs from Cal Poly will join with community members to share the music, food, dance, and crafts that help to construct the rich, though sometimes overlooked, cultural heritages that exist in San Luis Obispo.

The family-friendly event is open to all and will feature a free, interactive kids’ zone; free performance area; and booths where student clubs will make and sell delicious cultural foods to raise money for their respective organizations. Local reggae favorites Resination will headline the event with a free performance on the Mitchell Park gazebo stage at 3 p.m. Event publicity sponsors include the city of San Luis Obispo and Wild 106 radio station.

The MultiCultural Center cultivates a campuswide community that represents and celebrates the diversity of Cal Poly’s student body. For more information, contact Ian-Hero Serrano or Renoda Campbell at 805-756-1405 or mcc@calpoly.edu, or visit the MultiCultural Center Web site at http://multicultural.calpoly.edu.

For Cal Poly students that enrolled as a freshman the word WOW has a special meaning. While most universities have some sort of orientation program, Cal Poly not only welcomes their students to the university, but to the city of San Luis Obispo as well.

Here is a look at a WOW cheer/skit practice:

For local residents or visitors to the area this can be quite a surprise. The portion of the orientation that takes place on campus is practically invisible to the local community. The portion that takes place in the downtown area is comparable to a mass invasion. Officially Cal Poly calls the week long event The Week of Welcome. The newly arriving students have thus been tagged as “wowies”.

Mitchell Park, near the heart of downtown, serves as the landing zone. Buses bring wave after wave of bright eyed wowies. Information booths and loudspeakers are set up in the park. Wowies are each part of a smaller group that has a group leader. The leader is charged with making sure his group follows their scheduled plans and STAYS SAFE. It really looks more like a Hollywood “B” movie prodction of a Summer Camp in SLO. The entire week resembles summer camp in some respects, such as skits, new friends, group leaders, camp t-shirts, and lots of planning…

After the park is filled to near capacity a few mass messages are conveyed thru the loudspeakers, and then they are off.

Local businesses have seized the moment and many of those businesses even have a token gift welcoming the new students/customers to San Luis Obsipo. The group leader guides his wowies around the downtown area familiarizing them with the atmosphere of the small city that will be their home for the next five years. (Why five years? The Impacted Classes of Cal Poly will be another article.) Most wowies almost seem a bit overwhelmed as they are whisked from storefront to restaurant to Black Horse Coffee Shop (locally owned) and then back to Cal Poly for more fun and excitement.

Like nearly everything that Cal Poly does, the simple freshmen orientation started off as a simple idea but has become a “Welcome Program” that many other universities might want to take a look at.

The main purpose of a program such as the Week of Welcome is student retention and increased student performance. For many students their first year of college marks the first time that they have left home. Living alone for the first time is a huge challenge in itself. Studies found that programs such as Cal Poly’s Week of Welcome helped students adjust to their new environment. This means a better student retention rate for the university, better academic performance for the students, and also much lower suicide rates for freshmen students who are now more familiar with their new surroundings and more likely to have made a few friends during the WOWie invasions.
WOW-A-RAMA …. The group leaders are in the blue t-shirts (like summer camp)

September 11th was remembered across the country and throughout the state of California. There were meetings, events, and rallys all across the state. Firemen were especially solemn as they remembered their brethern that had charged into the buildings and their own death.

Many of the rallys featured groups riding their American made Harleys. 9/11 was the catalyst that threw The United States into war in much the same way that the attack on Pearl Harbor had done. The lives that were lost at Ground Zero were remembered as the days events unfolded around the nation.

The Hells Angels that roared up California Highway 101 on the afternoon of 9/11 symbolized the toughness of America’s spirit while at the same time reminded us that no matter our walk of life we all experienced a loss on September 11th when terrorists changed the rules of the past. We must all remember what happened to help keep it from happening again.

As the Hell’s Angels passed I thought of their motto of “When we do right, no one remembers. When we do wrong, no one forgets”. The motorcycle club (gang?) has been around a long time. They are often thought of as “the ultimate bad boys”. At the same time there is something very American about them. They are tough, independent, hard working, American made motorcycle riding tough guys. They are the type of American that you want on your side if the terrorists ever land on the beaches and start marching towards your home.

You could see them coming in your rear view mirror in graceful weaves as they passed thru the traffic that didn’t make room or even see them coming. The were traveling at about ninety m.p.h. and in a moment that had come and gone.

Because of September 11th ( I suppose ) their jacket bore their bright colors proudly, and spotlessly, declaring that they are Americans and Hells Angels.

When I was sixteen I worked at Sebastian’s General Store in San Simeon, CA.. That was the first time that I had ever met anyone in the Hells Angels.

Hells Angels Colors

The 1970′s were still a wild time at Big Sur and the Hells Angels looked as rough and tough as they come. Sebastians was really just a grocery store with a gas pump on the side. As the first biker flipped open the gas cap on his Harley I approached, nozzle in hand, ready to “fill ‘er up”. As soon as I was within arms reach he pulled the pump nozzle from my hands and carefully proceeded to fill his tank. Without a word he handed the nozzle to the biker behind him before I could take it.

Being a nervous sixteen year old I though I was doomed. I had heard how tough these guys were. They looked even tougher than the legends. They had been camping and it showed. Their jackets were covered in dust or grime or both. They really looked more like pirates than anything else. With nearly a hundred riders that day I was afraid that it was going to take me the rest of the summer to earn enough to pay my boss back for the gas money that I wasn’t going to get.

The last rider to fill up was riding a “trike”. A trike was somewhat of a novelty at the time and the engine sounded like a dragster. After he filled up he pulled a large amount of cash from a dusty leather bag and paid for ALL of the riders. To say the least I was relieved, but at the same time thought that it was rather cool to have actually seen the Hells Angels of California up close.

Hells Angels Weave Thru Traffic on September 11th

Wikipedia talks more about the Hells Angels here.

The history of the Hells Angels is shrouded in mystery and controversy, due in part to the fact that various individuals have been solely attributed to its founding, and also due in part to a very strict code of secrecy and what can be construed as a practice of deliberate mythologizing by some members of the club. Members don’t use last names, even with one another. They just use a first name, and, more often than not, a nickname. Due to its colorful history and the confirmed links of some of its members to organized crime, speculation and rumor about both the club’s history and activities are rife.

Joe Pasinato the spokesman for the Forest Service says the wildfire in the San Rafael Wilderness Area has been approximately 10 percent contained by Tuesday.

The area is a rugged wilderness with steep hills covered in loose rocks, brush and debris. Fighting such a fire would be nearly impossible without air support. The wilderness is also filled with rattlesnakes to make a dangerous job even more nerve racking.

Firefighters have been flown in from around the country to help with the huge blaze. Nearly 21,000 acres have been scorched so far. The cause of the fire, which began Saturday afternoon about 25 miles east of Santa Maria, is still unknown.

The tickets at many theaters were sold out across the country. The line itself has become a social event in American culture, and San Luis Obispo is no different. The line stretched from the Fremont entrance all the way around the San Luis Obispo County Goverment Center. The crowd of Harry Potter enthusiasts came in costume or just came comfortable and warmly dressed. With sleeping bags, pillow, wizard hats, and wands they discussed the previous sagas and speculated as to what waited ahead.

Many of the younger fans have grown up with the characters who are the same age. The film’s midnight release was a hit around the country as well as San Luis Obispo County.

The overall ratings so far have placed this film as a thumbs-up, B+, otta-see-it flic.

Downtown San Luis Obispo Criterium Racing has been going strong since the mid 1970s. The idea of a city closing its main streets and arranging bales of hay on the corners is a rare sight to see. When the race starts the truly unique character of what you are witness to begins to set in. Some of the best riders in the World are flying by you at breakneck speed while having the grace that only being an eye witness can truly explain.

Riders stream around a corner inches from each other.

Any professional sport has that special aura around its athletes that spend years of their life perfecting that special something that separates them from those of us that only dream to be as good.

Rock Racing Team Leading the Pack

Most of us have ridden a bicycle but few of us will ever ride at a speed that we would be ticketed for if we were on the same street in a car. The duration of the race makes the speed even more awe inspiring as they race at a near sprint for eighty minutes straight.

Pro cycling is a team sport and that means many things to each member. The point system that governs who gets to do what in a complicated World of Professional Cycling means sacrifice for some team members and can mean a path to stardom for others. As a team racers create a draft for their fellow teammates. Pushing the air out of the way becomes part of the overall strategy for any race. Unlike a horse race, just because someone is out in front with a big lead does not mean that is the person that is going to win. Today was no exception.

The cyclists were called to the front of the pack who had earned their place in the front row. Quietly paused in the second row was Rahsaan Bahati of Rock Racing, Bib number 85, shown here second from the left in the red, white and blue jersey.

The beaches were crowded, there was smoke everywhere, you had to wait in line for eveything, and everyone had a great time. All of these things are simply a part of the tradition on Central Coast Beaches.

The most important thing is the fog. If you wait all day to see the fireworks and then the fog rolls in five minutes before the fireworks display starts it can ruin you whole day. That didn’t happen this year. It was a clear evening with a beautiful display. Local photographer Kevin Cole shares some of his fireworks photos from his flickr.com account and lets you see just how clear it was. Kevin also has a local web page with some great photos here.

Google Maps provides a GREAT look at where the fireworks will be displayed in San Luis Obispo County. (see the map below)

If you want to see the exploding, burning, smoke emitting, and loud type of “real” fireworks you may want to make of not of the Morro Bay entry. This year Morro Bay will be celebrating with a laser light show that should be spectacular; however, it may not be what you expect if you just want the good old fashioned 4th of July fireworks.

As usual, the beach locations are always subject to the fog rolling in about the time that the fireworks start shooting off, or you can select a location in the inland portion of the county if you don’t want to take a chance on the fog. The weather has been warming up and the beaches have have been seeing more and more visitors.

Regardless of where you decide to celebrate the 4th we wish you a happy 4th. Enjoy the freedom that this country was founded upon, but remember to consider the rights of others and avoid drinking and driving. CHP presence is always increased during the 4th of July and DUI checkpoints are not uncommon.

A tiny hand held computer/printer enables a San Luis Obispo Traffic Enforcement Officer to issue a ticket in under a minute. This means that an officer can spend more time searching for violators and less time writing the actual ticket.

The License Plate is Entered in a Few Seconds

With a national and state budget crunch many communities are increasing parking violation fees. San Luis Obispo it no exception to this rule. Parking violation fines have all been increased an additional ten dollars in the City of San Luis Obispo. The standard fee for a meter time violation has been increased to twenty-seven dollars, but may be increased to an even thirty dollars in the near future. That would be a near doubling of the fee.

The Dreaded Expired Parking Meter

If you find one of these increased fee tickets on your windshield the biggest irony might be that you have raised the penalty upon yourself. Since the penalty has been increased by our elected officials, it is your vote (or lack thereof) that empowered them to do so. If you think that the fee is excessive you are also empowered to do something about it. Your city council members telephone numbers can be found here.

“I am afraid that a twenty seven dollar ticket will make customers think twice before deciding to shop downtown,”stated one manager of a local retail clothing store. “If I can park for free in a mall on the other side of town and not have to worry about a ticket then I might end up doing ALL of my shopping at the new “Forever 21” instead of the downtown women’s stores.”

Across the country communities seem divided upon what actually constitutes an excessive fine for a parking meter violation. New York City has two seperate scales for infraction fees. One for the Manhattan area, and one for the rest of the city. In Manhattan proper a meter violation will cost you sixty five dollars. In the rest of New York City it will cost you thirty five. If our fine is increased to thirty we will be within five dollars of the fine in one of the biggest cities in the World. Here is their fine schedule.

In the far corner of the Eastern United States Portland, Maine, has one of the friendliest parking ticket programs. The fine for an expired meter there will only cost you fifteen dollars. In addition to being more affordable they also recognize that we all all human and make mistakes.

Forgiveness Tickets

The City has put into effect a forgiveness ticketing system. People receiving a ticket related to parking at an expired meter, overtime parking or parking in more than one space, shall have the first parking violation notice every six months January-June and July-December automatically waived by the City.

We could also have a forgiveness program if we wanted to.

If you would like a forgiveness program you can get the ball rolling by contacting your city councilperson. Your city council members telephone numbers can be found here.

Even our president could have used a little forgiveness.

according to the Boston Globe:

Obama received 17 parking tickets in Cambridge between 1988 and 1991, according to the city’s Traffic, Parking & Transportation Department.

Of those tickets, he paid only two while he was a student and paid them late, said Susan Clippinger, the office’s director.

There are questions about the fee increase that only time can answer. How will the new fees impact downtown businesses? Will parking meter revenue decrease as fewer people shop downtown? Will tourism suffer as tourists are offended by the fee increases?

What is your opinion? Take a moment to comment below and

The Sunset Drive-In in San Luis Obispo offers a rare chance to experience a part of American Pop Culture. Operated by the same family since its beginning it is one of the few remaining Drive-Ins in the USA. Perhaps it is because the popularity of American Drive-ins peaked during the 1950′s that they still hold a nostalgic charm.

The Sunset Drive-In was started by Mr. Raymond Rodkey and has been run by his son, Larry Rodkey, ever since. The following short film details the entire history of the Sunset Drive-in.

Sunset Drive In @ Yahoo! Video

All Drive-ins were basically the same layout. They all had a giant outdoor screen. The size of the screen itself must be seen in person to truly respect the engineering that went into its design to be able to withstand wind, earthquake, and time.

Giant Movie Screen - Sunset Drive-in - San Luis Obispo

The projection booth was always centrally located and almost always in the same building as the snackbar. Many drive-ins featured a playground as well for the children to play prior to the start of the first movie. Ticket prices often made it more affordable for a family to attend a film at a drive-in. During the double feature intermission the Sunset Drive-in snackbar has been a meeting place for local friends for decades.

As Americans we show great concern for rare and endangered species. If Drive-ins were birds they would surely be on the endangered species list. During the fifties the drive-in was where many young people experienced their first kiss. Many fifties car clubs include a meeting at a drive-in as one of their events. If you have never been to a drive-in, try to place visiting the Sunset Drive-in high on your “must do” list.

California was the King Drive-in state at one time. The drive-in website DriveInMovie.com sums up California drive-in history as follows:

California’s first drive-in movie theatre opened in
June of 1938 (there were less than 15 “auto theatres”
in all of America at that point). Within just ten years,
another 43 drive-ins had opened up and Calfornia was
on its way to becoming one of the top drive-in states.

Between 1948 – 1958, the number of drive-ins in the
state of California more than quadrupled and, while
the number of operating drive-ins in most states had
peaked in the late 1950′s, the number of drive-ins in
the state of California kept climbing through the 60′s,
with more than 220 in operation by end of the decade.

Since that time, the number of drive-ins operating within
the state has declined by 90%. Still, California is one of
the Top5 Drive-in states and more than 20 remain open.

(Current estimates place the number of operating drive-ins in California to be as few as twelve.)

During the fifties that real estate could still be found at a price that would allow a drive-in to operate for a profit. Wikipedia points out that it has largely been due to the rising land values that drive-ins have been pushed out of existence. Put simply, drive-ins have been torn down and replaced by shopping malls.

San Luis Obispo Swap Meet

The remaining drive-ins have subsidized themselves by offering swap meets during daylight hours and showing films at night. The Sunset Drive-in in San Luis Obispo is no exception. The marque reveals this as the words “Swap Meet” share equal billing with the latest Hollywood blockbusters. Every Sunday you can find bargains on almost anything that you can think of starting from 6:00 A.M. until almost noon. Adopting a flexible business model and including a Swap Meet has made it possible for San Luis Obispo to still enjoy the benifits of having its own drive-in.
