Courtesy Photo Growing up in western Nebraska as one of seven children, Teresa Scanlan didn’t always have access to the finest in fashion. “I loved creating my own looks from hand-me-downs by cutting, sewing, tying or gluing articles of clothing to create a different piece,” she tells PEOPLE. “For several years in high school I was also building clothes out of colored duct tape.” But now, as the reigning Miss America, Scanlan’s sense of style has definitely evolved. “As I traveled this past year, I did my own hair and makeup and chose my own outfits; I actually preferred it that way because there was so much freedom,” she says. “I was able to use my own personal style and get creative.” Calling Miss America “current and trendy, yet sophisticated, elegant and appropriate,” Scanlan says she always thinks about the impression she might make on others when getting dressed in the morning, and “how my look might be communicating a certain message to them.” In other words, “Less skin is more,” she stresses

The new statue, unveiled at Madame Tussauds New York this week, features the Pittsburgh Steelers star’s signature curls, as well as his uniform (and similar hair visitors can try on). “It’s kind of weird to see your face, your body from a different perspective,” Polamalu tells PEOPLE. “Just looking at it from a distance, it’s pretty surreal.” The figure follows last year’s news that the athlete’s voluminous hair was insured by Head & Shoulders for $1 million

October 7th-10th, 2011 disabled veterans, police and firefighters, along with other adults & children with disabilities will travel to Pismo Beach, California to experience the healing power of the ocean and the thrill of surfing. Many of these Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, & Marines lost limbs, were burned, have a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or have PTSD from serving in operations overseas. Our police and firefighter heroes were injured here at home in the line of duty.
